My Image Colour Blocked Top (M1412) Review

diamond_top_product_frontThis dress pattern has gorgeous style style lines and is perfect for colour blocking.  It is from the Spring/Summer 2014 edition of My Image and has been on my wishlist for a while now.   Actually, there are a quite few other My Image patterns that I’ve been meaning to make.  But there is always that hesitation of trialling a new pattern company and working out how their draft compares to my dimensions.  So, I thought I’d dip my toe in the water with this pattern and make it as a top.

I’ve used the red and black geometric print for the main colour with plain black for the contrast.  So this top will tie in well with the black group of fabrics from my plan and possibly the red pants.

To decide on the size, I measured the finished bust, waist and hip on the pattern sheet.   The size I wanted turned out to be the same as the size chart suggested.  Normally with the Big4, I go 1-2 sizes down, so it is nice to see an accurate size chart.   To convert the dress to a top, I measured the back length of my favourite top and used this ( plus hem allowance) to mark the cut line for the top.

I made no adjustments to the sizing, other than the length.  The main front panel has a small bust dart that I converted to gathering instead.  The neckline is also faced.  Some people don’t like facings on knits, but I think they give a clean neckline, especially with the colour blocking.  I did find the front facing wanted to flip out until I tacked the edges of the facing to the princess seam.

The colour blocking is very figure flattering – from squaring up the shoulder line to showing nice curves.   For a top straight out of the box, I’m really happy with the fit.  The shaping of the sleeve cap is one of the best I’ve used.  I’ll have to update my TNT T-shirt pattern with this sleeve/armhole draft!  The pattern is definitely a winner.

    1. Ooops! Silly me forgot to link to the website. The magazine is produced by a Dutch company MadeByOranges. The shipping was quite reasonable and quick. I’ve also made a knit biker jacket from another edition that I hope to put a post together today or tomorrow.

  1. Lovely top. This pattern is on my wish list too. I was lucky enough to get a copy of the magazine in a giveaway last year from Melissa of FehrTrade and I’m a bit ashamed not to have made anything from it yet. Sharon, you can purchase it online: google My Image and you should get the company website

      1. Totally normal I’d say! I’ve got at least 4 too, and have only made one thing: a cowl neck top from an early issue. I’ve made it umpteen times though. I really should try another of their patterns.

          1. 🙂 Awesome! I’m thinking of trying one of the pant patterns. Perhaps the stretch pants with the stitched tucks in the side panels. Can’t remember the pattern number off hand.

Can’t wait to see what you choose!
